Meijer Gardens presents the largest public scoop exhibit in Grand Rapids history.

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, the most significant sculpture experience in the Midwest and an emerging cultural destination on the national scene, is pleased to introduce the never-before-exhibited PALETTA GRANDE ("Big Scoop", "Large Shovel") by Francesco Nicola Sansovino, in his grandest public art exhibition to date. His artistry debuts in the United States exclusively at the spectacular Frederik Meijer Gardens world-class gardens and sculpture park.
"Meijer Gardens is delighted to bring art into our community by presenting Francesco Nicola Sansovino in Grand Rapids, an exhibition that complements the history and significance of Leonardo Da Vinci's great horse 'Gran Cavallo' and expresses nature's call as we all can relate," said Joseph Becherer, curator and director of the Sculpture Program at Meijer Gardens. "We are pleased to work with Fondamento per la Scultura Naturale (Foundation for Natural Sculpture) to bring about this important piece of whimsical imagery. A very big horse makes for very big poop and very big poop calls for a very big scoop. Sansovino's grand vision is now fulfilled, to see us smile at ourselves and find playful delight in the creativity of art in all its frolicsome forms, even mischievousness."
Displayed at ground level which allows for easy visitor interaction, the 12 x 12 foot scoop with 22 foot handle is an awesome triumph, inspiring gasps and grins by adults and children alike. Visitors can pick up an educational brochure at the exhibition podium or visitor information desk and page through the exhibit literature describing the history and chronology of PALETTA GRANDE — "From Scoop Thought to Scoop Reality." The exhibit also features PALETTA MINIATURA, a 1/8th scale replica interactive display. Visitors can discover in miniature how a stack of flat aluminum sheet metal can unfold and transform into a 3 dimensional GRANDE scoop.

Elizabethtown - Elizabethtown is a 2005 American film written and directed by Cameron Crowe starring Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst. Orlando Bloom plays a shoe designer visiting his father's hometown in Kentucky in the days following the father's death, and Kirsten Dunst plays a flight attendant. Alec Baldwin has a small role as a CEO of an athletic shoe company, and Susan Sarandon appears as a grieving widow.

You wouldn't expect a great roadtrip in this movie, but the last part of the movie has one of the greatest roadtrip sequences I've ever seen. Watch it!





Midnight Run - Directed by Martin Brest . Robert De Niro stars as Jack Walsh, a hard-bitten bounty hunter offered $100,000 to bring in embezzler Jonathan Mardukas (Charles Grodin). Handcuffed to the wimpy Mardukas, Walsh assumes that the extradition trip from New York to Los Angeles will be an uneventful one. But the prisoner hasn't told Walsh the whole story: the embezzler owes $15 million to a mobster (Dennis Farina), and he's been targeted for assassination. It's a toss-up as to what is the most entertaining aspect of Midnight Run: the slam-bang action and chase sequences or the verbal byplay between DeNiro and Grodin. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Easy Rider - Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper set out for New Orleans from L.A. on their impossibly cool motorcyles, and have, well, a road trip to remember. Jack Nicholson gives a good turn as an ACLU lawyer. Hopper directed this one and won the 1969 Cannes Prize for his efforts. Come on, you wish your road trips were this cool.



RV - Join Robin Williams and his dysfunctional family on a last minute desperate attempt to bring his family together, a cross country RV vacation. Or is that the real reason they are taking this rip-roaring road trip. From trying to hook up a waste pipe taking the RV on a off-road adventure, you will laugh and maybe even remember some trips that you have taken with your family.


National Lampoon's Vacation - The Griswold family's exodus to Wally World might not be as hip as Easy Rider, but it's definitely funnier. On their way to CA from their Chicago home, the Griswolds stop off at every offbeat roadside attraction they can find, sample Cousin Eddie's Hamburger Helper burgers (without the hamburger), leave a dead relative tied up in lawn chair, and lose all their money. They cap off their adventure by forcing a Wally World security guard, played by John Candy, to take them around the closed amusement park at gun point. Well, it was a long drive.. we've all been there...
Rainman - In this heart warming tale you encounter a down and out business man played by Tom Cruise and his new found autistic sibling played by Dustin Hoffman. They set out on a cross country trip in an old Buick convertible, through the heart land of America. Watch as Tom Cruise tries to teach his autistic brother about life and instead learns much more than he could ever imagine. A true classic.


Thelma and Louise - Two girlfriends (played by Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis) leave dead-end jobs and no-good men behind to have a little fun. When one of them is forced to kill a man, they make their road trip permanent as they run from the law. Sure, it doesn't end so well for them, but they sure had a good time along the way. Secretly, us girls like to think there is a little bit of Thelma and Louise in all of us.



Little Miss Sunshine-
The Hoover family (Alan Arkin, Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear and Paul Dano) and their 7-year-old, Olive (Abigail Breslin), travel from Albuquerque, N.M., to the Little Miss Sunshine pageant in Redondo Beach, Calif. I loved this movie.


The Sure Thing (1985)-
Runtime: 1 hr 35 mins
When free-spirited but juvenile Walter "Gib" Gibson (John Cusack) meets studious, uptight Alison Bradbury (Daphne Zuniga) at an unnamed Ivy League college, sparks fly; unfortunately, they are mostly of the disastrous variety as all of Gib’s attempts at courtship fall painfully apart. Inevitably, the duo is tossed together when they both answer the same ad for a ride to California. While Alison is traveling to reunite with her tidy law school boyfriend, Gib is on the road to meet a beautiful girl his best friend promises him is "a sure thing." Before too long, Gib and Alison’s bickering inflames the driver, who promptly deposits the two with their suitcases on the side of a lonely highway thousands of miles from their destination. As the misadventures pile up, the initially contentious pair begin to take a liking to one another--but do these two dare fall in love? Rob Reiner’s initial attempt at romantic comedy pays subtle homage, with gentle lyricism, to the classic screwballs of early Hollywood. Get a grand view of the Davis Mountains — known popularly as the Texas Alps — on this 74-mile oval comprised of Route 166, Route 17 and Route 118. Also brush up on your astronomy with a stop at the excellent McDonald Observatory, which offers daily tours and nighttime stargazing.

It's also worth taking a detour to nearby Marfa, Texas to see the infamous "Marfa Lights." These are the only truly unexplained phenomena I've ever seen with my own eyes.

The Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia to North Carolina

The Route: Winding 469 miles atop the crest of a gorgeous mountain range, the Blue Ridge Parkway begins at the southern border of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and ends at the doorstep of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in western North Carolina. The route offers plenty of spectacular Appalachian countryside, and the cool mountain air makes for an ideal summer drive. The whole parkway, allowing for frequent stops, takes three or four days to complete, and the towns clustered along its path are loaded with motels, so lodging is a breeze.

In many ways, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a throwback to a simpler age: two-lane blacktop the whole way, no stop signs or traffic lights, a 45-mph speed limit, with numbered stone posts marking the miles along the way. The road’s twisting path through the hills is extraordinary, with mountain vistas visible from hundreds of scenic overlooks and turnouts. Hiking trails extend from the roadway into the surrounding forest, and historic exhibits, many featuring log cabins and other preserved or restored buildings, explain what pioneer life was like in the region a century ago.

There are also several interesting natural attractions within a few miles of the road, including the Blowing Rock, a cliff where constant strong updrafts cause objects tossed over the edge to “fall” up instead of down. As long as you’re not claustrophobic, be sure to check out Linville Caverns, a limestone cave full of stalactites and stalagmites. And Looking Glass Falls is one of America’s most picturesque waterfalls, a perfect place to take a breather after a long day of driving.


Worth a Detour

The Blue Ridge Parkway skirts the city limits of Roanoke, making for easy access to the Virginia Museum of Transportation. Housed in an old railway freight station, the museum features a train yard filled with vintage locomotives, passenger cars and cabooses, most of them open for interior walk-throughs.

Worth a Day
History buffs should make the half-hour drive east of the parkway to Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. It was here that Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, effectively ending the Civil War. The exhibits are superb, and the history is everywhere.

The Alphabet Game: Similar to the A-Z License Plate game above - but this time, instead of find the letters of the alphabet in license plates, find them on the signs you pass. You can only use the signs on your side of the road - and remember, you have to find them in order!

Name 20: Take turns naming things objects that you are taking with you on your trip. ie. "I'm going to New York and I'm taking an Anaconda." Each person must also be able to name all of the objects that have been previously stated. "I'm going to New York and I'm taking an Banana and an Anaconda."

On the Road Scavanger Hunt: Before you hit the road, devise a list of objects each person has to identify along the way (a water tower, a horse, a purple car - anything you want!).

Find A State: In this game you make a list of all 50 states, include any Canada Provance as well, and as you find each license plate that is from that state check it of. Two rules however, one your car does not count and two you can not check off your state until you are out of your state. Make the list a head of time so your not searching for paper in the car. The game is played until you reach home, so see how many states you can find.

Name that Roadkill: Our all-time favorite - You get a point if you are the first to identify an upcoming carcass, 5 points if it's the first of its kind on that trip and 10 points if you have never seen one before.

The kids and I snagged (along with usual skunks, raccoons and squirrels) a possum in West Virginia, a vulture killed while eating a deer in Pennsylvania (15 points), a coyote in Virginia, and an aardvark in Texas.

The Route How can it be that America’s most famous highway is left off most road atlases? Route 66, which was long ago bypassed by interstate freeways, has been decommissioned and is no longer an official federal highway, so it doesn’t appear on normal maps. About 85 percent of the original Chicago-to-Santa Monica route is still there, however, and you can navigate it by getting a series of maps from the National Historical Route 66 Federation, which also publishes an excellent Route 66 eating and lodging guide and offers tons of other useful info — an essential resource for anyone planning a trip on the Mother Road.

Route 66 has achieved such iconic status in the American imagination that it’s hard for the 2,400-mile route (which takes about two weeks to traverse) to live up to the legend, especially now that many of the bypassed towns and businesses have fallen on hard times. But you can still get your kicks on Route 66 if you know where to stop.

The classically nostalgic Cozy Dog Drive In located in Springfield, Ill., claims to be the commercial birthplace of the corn dog. The massive praying hands statue at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa is a jaw-dropper — either glorious or kitschy, depending on your point of view. But it’s nothing compared to the magnificent Meteor Crater near Two Guns, Ariz. And it’s hard (for some) not to pull over in Helendale, Calif., at the Exotic World Burlesque Museum.


Worth a Detour
Six miles west of Amarillo, Texas, is the oddball masterpiece known as Cadillac Ranch, a series of 10 vintage Caddies half-buried nose-down in the ground. Visitors are welcome 24/7, and you can do almost anything to the cars — climb on them, paint graffiti on them, whatever. But don’t even think about taking the wheels or hubcaps; they’re welded in place.

    Please meet Monty, the 31 foot Tyrannosaurus Rex who watches over Nature's Art of Connecticut. Nature's Art is part mineral/crystal/fossil gallery, part kids swimming pool, part gift shop, and part roadside cafe. Monty, whose eyes glow red in the dark, has been watching over it all since 2000. Since then, Monty has been joined by 25 other dinosaurs, who populate the pool area, and in August of 2005, Monty became the proud father of Chester, a robotic baby T-Rex, whom you can meet in the fossil gallery. Not that Monty doesn't look great all the time, but if you are lucky enough to visit him around a holiday, he'll be decked out in his seasonable best. More Roadside Attractions
